Statement "Whoever controls the media, controls the mind." Jim Morrison Eleven is an action/drama short film originally derived from a desire to utilise a continuous take for narrative effect. Too many times I've seen films shot this way but nothing solid to support the intention for doing so other than a personal artistic choice. The main scene of Eleven is captured from a static position with the camera locked off on a single wide shot that runs for about six and a half (6˝) minutes. Bearing this in mind, I knew the critical question was; “How do I maintain the audience’s attention for the duration of the shot? The only solution to this was to firstly work with brilliant actors, ensuring the performances are not only engaging but instils tension in the audience as the story progresses along, and secondly ensure the drama and tension peaked, troughed and climaxed in a similar way a stage play does with three acts. In addition, by interacting and melding the various grounds, i.e. the background, the mid-ground and the foreground, it added to the performances delivered and assisted in building the tension experienced. I wanted to make something that allows the audience to question its presentation but at the conclusion realise its purpose. In an attempt to achieve this, I crafted a story that drew on themes that are resonant in today's society and question's our actions resulting from poor worldly choices. It also strikes a question as to whether the media in itself is influencing world perception and influence; that it almost seems to be more of a priority to gain ratings by what you present as opposed to the privilege of delivering ethical & truthful information; which brings me to revise Jim Morrison's quote to, "Whoever controls the media, controls the world." We live in a society that rejects violence, yet in an oddly paradoxical way, we hunger for it. At the conclusion, the film ends on a question leaving you to decide on the answer, for it is we who ultimately control our destiny and the direction as to how the state of the world will be like tomorrow.
